What is burnout?
Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged or excessive stress, often related to work or caregiving.
It happens when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands.
Over time, this can lower productivity, drain your motivation, and even affect your health.
Common signs of burnout:
Constant fatigue and lack of energy,
Feeling detached, unmotivated, or cynical about work or responsibilities, difficulty concentrating or decreased performance, irritability or mood swings, trouble sleeping or changes in appetite, physical symptoms like headaches, stomach issues, or muscle pain,
How to prevent burnout:
1. Set boundaries:
Learn to say no when your plate is full.
Separate work from personal time (e.g., avoid emails late at night).
2. Prioritize rest and recovery:
Get enough sleep consistently.
Take regular breaks during the day.
Schedule vacations or days off, even short ones.
3. Manage workload effectively:
Break big tasks into smaller steps.
Delegate responsibilities when possible.
Focus on what matters most instead of trying to do everything.
4. Practice stress management:
Try mindfulness, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
Engage in hobbies or creative outlets.
Exercise regularly to release tension.
5. Build supportive connections:
Talk with friends, family, or colleagues about how you’re feeling.
Join communities or support groups if you feel isolated.
6. Take care of your health:
Eat balanced meals and stay hydrated.
Limit caffeine, alcohol, or substances that can worsen fatigue.
7. Check in with yourself:
Reflect regularly on your stress levels and adjust before things escalate.
Consider journaling to process feelings.
8. Seek professional help if needed:
A therapist, counsellor, or doctor can help if burnout is severe or persistent.
