10 Most popular scams on and off the internet!
There are several things that many people agree feel like scams, and even though they’ve become so normalized that we rarely question them anymore.
I got myself in big "trouble" for putting this online.
I believe in being honest with friends, peers, strangers, in business transactions, never mind the extra fees, just be fair.
There is no law against such action, so it's staying right where it is, so people know what kind of scammers we deal with in everyday business.
Here are some of the biggest ones:
1. “Convenience Fees” for Paying Online;
Paying your bills online saves the company time and labour, yet you get charged an extra fee for it.
How does paying digitally cost more than mailing a cheque?
2. Ticketmaster & Concert Ticket Fees;
A $60 ticket somehow becomes $102 after:
“service fee”
“processing fee”
“facility fee”
“delivery fee” for an email.
It’s the same seat, just way more expensive.
3. Airline Baggage & Seat Selection Fees;
You pay for a plane ticket, then pay extra to:
choose a seat,
bring luggage,
bring carry-on luggage,
It’s like paying for a sandwich and being charged extra for the bread.
4. Subscriptions That Should Be One-Time Purchases;
Software that used to be a one-time buy is now:
monthly,
auto-renewing,
difficult to cancel,
Sometimes companies make cancel buttons nearly impossible to find, on purpose.
Amazon had that, till they got sued for the illegal process of cancellation.
5. “Service Fees” at Restaurants (While Still Tipping)
Some restaurants add:
a “kitchen appreciation fee.”
a “wellness fee.”
a “non-cash adjustment fee.”
Then still expect the traditional tip on top of it.
That is unethical and illegal in my book.
6. Credit Card Interest
Credit cards make it extremely easy to get into debt, then charge 20% to 29% interest,
while banks pay you 0.5% interest on savings.
It’s designed to keep people paying forever.
There should be a law against most of these charges.
7. Shrinkflation;
Packages look the same but contain:
fewer chips,
less cereal,
smaller bars,
Same price (or higher), but you’re getting less product each year.
8. “Free Trials” That Auto-Renew;
It's funny how you can have autorenewal, but not auto-cancellation.
You sign up for a free month… until you realize you were billed for the next 18 months because you forgot to cancel.
9. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Companies;
These are legal pyramid schemes that sell:
essential oils,
makeup,
supplements,
overpriced household goods,
Most people lose money, but they’re marketed as “empowerment” and “entrepreneurship.”
10. Phone Plans & Data Overages;
You buy “unlimited” data—only to discover it slows to unusable speeds after a certain amount of time.
Unlimited… except it’s not.
Tim.
